Hey! Where are our bats?
Oh great. The Red Sox take a 3 game winning streak into Oakland, get a solid start from John Lackey... and the left their bats in Boston.Fannnntastic! Look, it is encouraging that Lackey had a good solid start right after Dice-K's start. But should the Sox really be WASTING them? And Okajima didn't exactly look great.I gave him a tearful good bye last December. That would be a more fitting ending

Hey look at that! A WIN!
The strangest thing about the win today was that John Lackey got the W... and he was DREADFUL.Meanwhile Yankees starter Phil Hughes was grotesque and Boone Logan was simply awful.Tub of Goo Bartolo Colon had the best pitching performance of the day. Going 4 1/3 innings, letting up 2 hits and striking out 5.NATURALLY Colon got the loss!I think I speak for Red Sox fans when I say "I'LL TAKE IT!"
Note the time... I am saying warm up the bullpen
2 innings in and Lackey stinks with a capital stinks. He has no command, no control and is throwing beach balls to the plate.Get some one warm NOW.Next time someone gets on second, Lackey goes to the showers. This is not a second guess.
A good sign
Dustin Pedroia homered and the batters got some good wood on Hughes. Now all the Sox need is to have Lackey let up fewer than 2 runs a damn inning, maybe the Sox could have a chance today!!!
Will the Red Sox-Yankees game be longer or shorter than Doctor Zhivago?
Doctor Zhivago clocks in at 200 minutes (3 hours, 20 minutes.)John Lackey's control looks awful.I am betting this game will be longer.

This is what I was afraid of with the Red Sox
At least there was no suspense in this game.Yeah, I know it is early. But one reason I wasn't swept up in the pre season hype was I felt like there were too many assumptions about the starting rotation. Lester and Buchholz were written in ink and the assumption was either Lackey, Beckett or Dice-K were going to be bouncing back.Well we had better HOPE so. John Lackey became John Lacking or John

Hey look at that! the Red Sox won a game!
So the Sox didn't get swept by the Orioles. It's been that kind of stretch run where THAT is the branch I cling to so I can feel better.A nice good old fashioned not close win. A few homers. Some nice pitching from Lackey. Boom! A win. There are 10 games left including 6 with the Yankees that, barring one of the most staggering collapses in baseball history, will be meaningless. Here's all I want

It may not be over... but I think the bartender yelled "Last Call"
The Yankees were down to their last out against the lowly Orioles and the Red Sox scored 9 runs.Would every Red Sox fan on the planet take that scenario for the night?Sure. What could POSSIBLY go wrong? How about everything? How about A-Rod crushing a game winning tater and John Lackey being dreadful? The Red Sox are 7 back in the loss column for a playoff spot with 15 games left to play. I didn't

There is a pulse... but oh man is it faint
At one point today, everything looked so great. The Red Sox had a lead late in their game with Tampa. And C.C. Sabathia was having a subpar outing.Things were aligning. The Red Sox had a more than good chance of climbing to 3 1/2 games of both New York and Tampa Bay for the best record in baseball (4 back in the loss column) and the idea of a sweep in Tampa became real. Then it happened.Dan F---ing

Cautious Optimism
I've been declaring the Red Sox dead for a while now... and I am not claiming they have pulled a Lazarus yet... but I must say that I am feeling good that they are not crumbling down the stretch to irrelevance like the 2001 and 2006 teams did.And they are showing some grit, responding to a Seattle comeback with a 3 run inning of their own and having Lackey grind out 8 innings... even though he
