The Red Sox honor Chuck Stobbs

Like with every team in baseball this evening, the Red Sox players all wore #42. It is a unique gesture from the Red Sox on this Jackie Robinson Day.Remember, the Red Sox were the first team to give Jackie a try out. Back in the mid 1940s the Red Sox had Robinson and Sam Jethroe play for scouts at Fenway Park. Supposedly someone yelled "Get that ni--er off the field."Seeing the Red Sox lost a

Ladies and Gentlemen... the Red Sox are the worst team in baseball!

Did Kyle Farnsworth really shut the Red Sox down?THAT Kyle Farnsworth? The guy with great stuff who constantly was beaten like an egg? He shut down Jacoby Ellsbury, J. D. Drew and David Ortiz 1-2-3 in a one run game?Did the Red Sox blow ANOTHER well pitched game by Jon Lester?Yeah yeah yeah, I know it is only April. But need I remind you of 1996? The Red Sox were the defending Division Champs,

Note the time... I am saying warm up the bullpen

2 innings in and Lackey stinks with a capital stinks. He has no command, no control and is throwing beach balls to the plate.Get some one warm NOW.Next time someone gets on second, Lackey goes to the showers. This is not a second guess.

Crawford is leading off?

This is the 6th game and Carl Crawford's 4th position in the batting order.Somehow Francona will be able to find a way to have him bat in 10 different spots.

Will the Red Sox-Yankees game be longer or shorter than Doctor Zhivago?

Doctor Zhivago clocks in at 200 minutes (3 hours, 20 minutes.)John Lackey's control looks awful.I am betting this game will be longer.

Phil Hughes might be just what the Red Sox need

Yeah the Red Sox have stunk and the Yankees are in town. All could be awful if the Red Sox lose. But guess who also stinks?Phil Hughes. He stunk the second half of last year, he stunk in the playoffs and he stunk in his first start. So let's say the Yankees come into Fenway, Hughes stinks it up and the Red Sox get a win at home.It will go a long way to healing some wounds in Boston.LET'S GO SOX!

Questions for panicking Red Sox fans

1. With 156 games left, do you think the Red Sox have enough time to close the 4 game gap with the Yankees?2. Do you think Kevin Youkilis will finish the season batting .105?3. Will the Red Sox home record improve from 0-0?4. Do you think that Blue Jays infielder Yunel Escobar is going to win the batting title? He currently leads the AL with a .474 average.5. While the Red Sox are slumping, the

Are you KIDDING ME?????

So it has come to this.6 losses to no wins. And this was a game where the Red Sox could have won about a dozen times.Jon Lester was dealing. They got some men on base. They got a great catch on a bunt by Jarrod Saltalamacchia. And they faced Fausto Carmona, who let up 10 runs in 3 innings against the White Sox in his only start of the year.Yes. I just wrote 10 runs.NATURALLY he shut the Red Sox

I am not feeling well... but I am doing better than the Red Sox

I am having an allergy attack. My head is stuffed up.I feel like the guy whose head was in a vice in Casino.I can barely breathe. And yet I still feel healthier than the Red Sox.Neither Dice-K nor Beckett pitched BADLY. This team is just dead from the neck up.Something has got to give soon. I know it is early, but you can't afford to give away whole WEEKS!OK, off to bed.Achoo.

Did anything GOOD happen tonght?

OK, the Red Sox are 0-4. You really can't do worse than that over 4 games. And oddly, Carl Crawford has hit in 5 different spots in the lineup. I could be wrong about that, but I don't think I am.So, not to pull a "Besides that, Mrs. Lincoln how did you like the play?" but can we take anything positive from this?Well, Beckett pitched OK. Not great, but you can totally pin this loss on him.The

How can the Red Sox expect to score against a legend like Josh Tomlin?

Seriously, it's not fair. How can the Sox line up, a rag tag bunch of misfits, possibly get MORE than a run when Cy Young favorite Josh Tomlin is on the hill?No wonder they sent J. D. Drew to the plate when he was thrown out. Runs are at a PREMIUM when Tomlin is on the hill. The only question is will he win 30 games this year.No shame in being completely shut down by him. It's like facing Maddux in

Josh Beckett... the earning of $15.75 million begins NOW

Seriously, it is time for Josh to be Josh again. In my Star Trek movies to Josh Beckett chart, we should be due for Star Trek VI, which was good. (No really, it was.)So let's get going... it's off to Cleveland, the site of Beckett's greatest triumph as a member of the Red Sox.Remember? In 2007, he became the American Bad Ass! The Sox were down 3-1 and Cleveland was on the verge of winning the

Whose opening was worse? Charlie Sheen or the Red Sox?

There wasn't a lot of "Winning" going on with either one. In fact both flopped pretty dramatically.I would argue that the Red Sox had a worse opening. Because with Charlie, what exactly could you possibly have expected the show to be?He wasn't going to sing. Or dance. And clearly no writers were on tour to feed him lines. (Although it is safe to say Sheen had a LOT of lines before the show.)So if

I didn't want to win a game this weekend

I like starting a season in an 0-3 hole. It is more fun that way.Seriously, this was a pretty lousy display by my Red Sox, picked by so many to go all the way. It was home run derby off of both Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz and frankly that makes me nervous.I know it is against Texas and they are a good home run team. But what happened to "Good Pitching beats Good Hitting."The Sox have an off day

This is what I was afraid of with the Red Sox

At least there was no suspense in this game.Yeah, I know it is early. But one reason I wasn't swept up in the pre season hype was I felt like there were too many assumptions about the starting rotation. Lester and Buchholz were written in ink and the assumption was either Lackey, Beckett or Dice-K were going to be bouncing back.Well we had better HOPE so. John Lackey became John Lacking or John

Is this any way to start a potential World Series season?

Seriously... the day after I write up my "What movies will this team mirror?" post, the give us this stinker? It started out so well. Ellsbury reaching on a 2 base error and the Sox up 2-0 before the Rangers even came to the plate. They went up 4-2 and even after Lester coughed up a bunch of homers, still had a thrill with Big Papi tying the game. And all of that got flushed down the toilet with a

Rest in Peace Lou Gorman

Lou Gorman passed away today... and had the Red Sox made that last out in the 10th inning of Game 6 of the 1986 World Series, he would have been a beloved genius. He would have been declared the great architect of the team that whipped the Curse. And unlike the 2004 team which was cobbled together from other organizations, he would have been hailed for having a predominantly home grown squad. Big Expectations for the 2011 Red Sox and other movies

A lot of people have written to me wondering why I haven’t written more recently about the Red Sox. We are on the eve of what could be a great season. It seems like everyone and their moose are picking my boys to win the Division and many others see them winning the pennant and even the World Series.I am super excited about the season, but I also know the danger of sky high expectations and I am

How Josh Beckett and the Star Trek films mirror each other

Josh Beckett’s tenure with the Red Sox is in sync with the quality of the Star Trek movies. Don’t believe me? Don’t understand me?Follow along… it is logical.Josh Beckett’s first season in Boston (2006)mirrored Star Trek: The Motion PictureBoth were eagerly anticipated by fans:Red Sox fans were getting the 2003 World Series MVP who conquered the Yankees.Star Trek fans were getting to return to

Maybe Josh Beckett should have been hit in the head LAST year!

Yeah, I know it is Spring Training and you have to take Grapefruit League stats with a grain of salt. That being said, it IS encouraging that he looked so sharp after getting clocked in the melon.Maybe if someone clocked him in the head last season, he could have been better than 6-6 with a 5.78 ERA.Either way, the Red Sox need to have Buchholz and Lester continue to pitch like they did last year
